With the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University applying Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to render timely, cost-effective and quality extension service to the farming community, the e-Velanmai model has become a hit in this part of the country.
“Given the problems the extension agents and researchers face in facilitating direct contact with the farming community, and considering the complexity of agriculture, the use of multi disciplinary expertise/specialists such as plant pathologist and entomologist has become absolutely important,”.

The e-velanmai project, a novel way to take technologies developed by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) to farmers with the help of information and communication technology (ICT) tools.

Technology Brings farmers closer to scientists
Farmers will be initiated into electronic agriculture or e-Velanmai’, the Information and Communications Technology (ICT)-enabled agricultural extension model, which has been successfully tested on over 1,000 farmers for three years.

e-Velanmai aims at empowering farmers
Experts at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University have called for scaling up the information and communication technology (ICT). Enabled agricultural extension `e-Velanmai’ model, which has been pilot tested and found successful at the field level, to benefit a large number of farmers in the State.

The model was a novel one meant for empowering farmers to adopt scientific agriculture. “The Government of Tamil Nadu is also keen to scale up this model of extension throughout the State as it is considered to be one of the best methods of extension suiting the heeds of the farming community,”.

The model was a cost-effective one that used ICT for providing timely agro advice. It provided scope for paid extension service in Tamil Nadu and enabled the technological participation of farmers in agriculture.

e-Velanmai was pilot tested and proved to be successful at field level and it needs to be scaled up to the benefit a huge number of farmers across the state. “JUT is ideal for revamping the existing system of extension to suit changing scenario in agriculture,”.
